So, this just came out 10 minutes ago, so I’ll review it right away!
The song is called Lipstick and from the title you can tell the vibe that it’s going to have. It sounds very fun, but it’s very suggestive. I watched the 3 minute and 33 second music video. I’m wondering if the 333 means something…I guess Charlie will reveal more soon. This was really a thirst trap MV. It had very warm visuals and keeping it simple gave the actual song time to shine. I wanted to see some lipstick, but didn’t. But it’s okay!
This song sounds even better than the teaser. I was a little unsure of it at first since I am very particular when it comes to his music (he spoiled us with the elements he implements in other songs). We got introduced to ‘Lipstick’ on his Instagram on August 2nd and he mentioned it would be released on the 18th. But We saw the tattoo on the 31st and it looks amazing. We saw some of the steps with all the layering: a siren (layered), piano, drums, bass, and lyrics. And he did the other layering with glass, some claps, more piano, call and response, whispering. Then lastly, we saw the visual teasers.
The intro was very sensual to me, but the rest of the song felt playful. So it made it easier to sing along to. And the melodies were very simple too so it made it more catchy. I know it will do well with streamers and SNS. I really like the happy sound. And his layering has always been good. The chord changes and the presets that he used were amazing
I like the call and response on the bridge of the song. And when the hook came back I was super happy to hear it. And then when it repeated that was good.
Listening to it a couple more times it got more catchy. I like the hook the most. Then the pre chorus. The Verses felt very conversational which made it more of an intimate experience. Charlie puts a lot of work into his music and I really appreciate his artistry. In my opinion, I really enjoy the time put into it and the layering. He knows how to really decorate the house for the party. In other words He really knows how to decorate his songs. The songs are usually something that has to be decoded as time goes on. I realized that after listening to my favorite song (Suffer).
Some people have compared it to some other songs, and I kinda agree that it has a familiar vibe, but not really to some of the ones that I read the comparisons on. He was nice to have lyrics on the MV so I listened along with the lyrics for the fourth time. I think they meant “Don’t cha” and not “Donta” on the second call and response, but I understood what they meant. One thing I also noticed was logically charlie’s part on the call and response should go second after the other singer, but it wouldn’t be as satisfying for the ear. But to the eye it would be awesome.
Not happy with “bitch” being in the lyrics, but hey it’s there. The reason why is because it was degrading. It’s giving you’re either a “one night stand” and a “bitch” or you’re a vision for “the future” and his “baby”. I’m not bashing the artistry, but it could be any other word you know? I think it would have been great without, but I can’t tell another artist how to do their art. It’s not my place. The whispering was cringey in my opinion especially since it went right into the lyrics, but it gave what I see Charlie as. His charm is the cringe and dorkiness is a fun personality to watch. If you have ever seen his old youtube videos it’s similar. It gives you a smile instantly.
Charlie mentioned that this is one of his “favorite mixes” he’s ever done. So, he is really proud of this song. And I am happy for him. It’s great to be in control of your music and have something to be proud of. That’s a great accomplishment and I know he feels great. Make sure you watch and stream “Lipstick” everyone! And I’ll be back soon to review more music!
