Mirani’s song titled “Hit Me Up” will be out at 2am today! It is featuring Mingi of Ateez.
Honestly, I was really excited to see what this collab brings. Honestly, I do have my thoughts on the preview, but I will wait until the end to give my opinion now that the song has dropped. Update: It dropped!
As of right now, there’s not much shown about it. But if AT AREA, Mirani, or Mingi would like to hit us up and give some hints, we are always open (or KQ hit us up!).
They did have something for a limited time where you comment the phone emoji, they give you a snippet of the song. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a reply. I do have to be honest. I am a bit disappointed with how the marketing/promotion of this song turned out. I didn’t see much about it. And if I wasn’t an ATINY (and MINKIS) I wouldn’t have found the song on the day it dropped. I usually look around for new music (just a thing I enjoy) so maybe after, but I wouldn’t have known right away. So that was a slight let down. Even some of the members did better than the people that were supposed to do promotions. Mirani promoted well on her account. At Area posted a few things as well. But I’m pressed about the telephone emoji promo. And Mingi even sang some of it during his TOKTOQ voice live.
I do I think that even if the phone emoji was supposed to serve 2 purposes to promote and get traffic on the post, at least do both right. You got some interaction on the post, at least be active with the promotion by sending that snippet. Interacting with your reactors also help. Get people excited for the song. It’s not fair for the artist to have to do so much themselves. But that’s my opinion and there will be a Uncomfy Cushion on promo as well in the near future. But let’s look on the bright side, I’m happy that I can experience it fully with no expectations except for the trailer. The song debuted August 7th, two days before Mingi’s birthday.
Let’s quickly talk about the music video. I just finished the behind the scenes. They both look comfortable and was having fun. Update: We got one from the Ateez channel as well! So, I got to see Mingi suggest some things. He was very active in the process of the filming as he says he likes to give suggestions, so he did. I was happy to see that, and I hope we see more of this in the future. I was hoping for a longer behind the scenes, but it’s okay. I did like how the set was utilized from the interior and exterior. I didn’t know it was a real building, I thought it was completely a set with some 3d rendering, so that was cool.
I think the music video was cute, and I like how playful it was. I think it matched well with the vibe of the song. I do wish to have seen more scenes in the music video. Like if we were solely sticking to this filming location, maybe more emotions and reactions. For example, trying to get the other one’s attention and being shy. I wanted to see a bit more. But again, not my place, but if anyone would like to hit me up as a creative direction, I got you! It was great, I just wanted to see more. And speaking from a ATINY POV, it was really nice seeing Mingi get to show other sides of himself.
Also, can we talk about how adorable the cover art is? I love it so much! I want to see it on some clothes. If you need ideas…hit me up (ha). Unfortunately, I was not able to find an instrumental for the song. I hope they release an official one soon or that someone makes one soon. I did see a karaoke one. And listening to it, there’s a lot going on, it does have the same things in the original though. It feels like this could have easily been in a gaming movie. Felt familiar at first listen (on the trailer), but it’s a lot going on. While it is fast paced, it has that fun feeling exuding from it. Listening as I dissect the vocals away from the track, I can hear how bouncy the beat is. I’m impressed. It’s very lively and works well with both of their verses. Speaking of which, the lyrics work so well with the emotions of the song (I don’t speak Korean well, so I read the translated lyrics).
Quick disclaimer: I do enjoy the song and music in general. I do talk about my thoughts in the lens’ of a listener and artist. Also, as an ATINY. I talk about stylist choices for the story of the song and behind the scenes information. Again, I do appreciate music, and I will just give my honest thoughts regardless of if I am a fan or not. So, if you don’t like these kinds of opinions, I do suggest some of our other content! As well as the standard reviews at the end of this year.
My thoughts (review):
The song is really cute! It grew on me. Initially, I was kind of let down because the beat, repetitive part of the chorus, and the length but then I found myself singing it over and over (and doing the dance). A catchy chorus always get me. I think these are the same factors that really made it solid.
The intro already sets you up for this cute vibe. Mirani really set the base of the song. I do wish the vocals were a bit lower because it feels like it’s fighting with the beat until the pre-chorus. I really like her sweet tone to her voice and the melodies were keeping me on my toes. I really like the soft vocals from both of them. It would have even been nicer to hear Mirani by herself first. Then with both of them after on the second round of the pre-chorus. I enjoy her tone on that pre-chorus as well. But I think solo it would have told the story of “What is he thinking?” “Does he like me back?” “Dude…this is killing me, what are we? Let me know!”-I think it makes the story being told in the song have more intensity. Especially when he does give that clarity by saying “Hit me Up” as well. But that’s just my idea of it.
I would’ve wanted to hear him as well on the whole chorus. Because some of the melodies are so playful and the bass in his voice would sound nice. Their voices complement each other so well. There tones are different but mix well. Both in this song: Mingi has a husky voice with more chest resonance and Mirani has bright tone a nasal resonance. I wish the last bit of her line before Mingi’s verse was held longer. However, this way made it feel like they were still a bit distanced before coming together.
When it gets to Mingi’s part, I was pretty impressed. It’s not like I’m surprised he has other colors to his voice, but it was nice to hear this. He tried something new. I knew that he sings a bit sometimes when in ATEEZ, but this one was a lighter more playful sing-rap that worked so well with the song. It really gave this side that was so refreshing to see. I think the album cover really represents it well. I think that I would’ve wanted breathiness from Mingi in the second part of his lines. I think that it was a bit much. I think the second half was a bit aggressive as well, it was active, but I liked the passive vocals from earlier. I like the difference though; I just wish it wasn’t as harsh of a contrast. I do like the ending with a question too. And the vocal preset used as well for the ad-libs. It was cute.
Going back to the length, I did want to hear more at first. I do wonder how a pre-chorus would be on this song. However, the replayability (I know it’s not a word okay.) with it being this way (with the song being the way it is now) is so good. I think it could repeat really well (and I have tried it lol!). It’s a really upbeat song the whole way through. It really reflects on how you feel waiting for someone to feel the same. Waiting for them to hit you up.
After looking at the behind the scenes on Mirani’s live, it was cool to see how they already knew each other before the song. I wish that we would let people interact naturally. I want to see more things like this.
They both took a lot of time recording this song. And Mirani said that Mingi took a long time redoing it until he liked it. I was really impressed by that; it just shows the amount of detail and effort he puts into things. And I am thankful they decided to work together. Both are credited as composers, vocalist, lyricist on the song! Mirani is credited as the programmer, as well! They worked really hard on this, and it shows. There is a dance challenge, you guys should check it out and do the dance!
Send love to Mingi and Mirani. And stream ‘Hit Me Up’!
