Jaehyun’s solo album is finally out, and along with the album, he released a music video for ‘Smoke’. This song is another R&B track to add to the album. It is very groovy with heavy bass and elements of electric guitar (it sounds like). The song sounds like a very flirty song of a man who is definitely seeking out a girl. With lines like,
“Hold up you’re too hot too hot
Smoke coming out the boombox”
and,
“I’m pulling around yeah
to come take you out”
,it is clear that this song involves a male very much interested in a girl he’d like to be his.
The music video involved some similarities from the ‘Dandelion & Roses’ mv, like the use of red, Jaehyun falling off of buildings, his dark and light dressing choices, and him being covered in liquid. A new addition that differs from the other mv is the choreography (there was movement in ‘Roses’, but not choreography). It was nice to have something for fans to dance to and for the chorus to have something memorable attached to it. I think the choreography fit the chorus nicely and was a great artistic choice.
What happened in the mv (to me):
It seems in the beginning of the music video, Jaehyun is being watched and he is paranoid taping every conceivable opening where he can be seen. Quite honestly it seems like he has many issues throughout the video like his nose bleeding (red theme), him being sucked into the couch and let out on a rooftop covered in liquid. By the end, there appears to be two Jaehyuns almost (the dark-dressed Jaehyun, and the light-dressed Jaehyun), the light-dressed Jaehyun seems to have it better as he’s dancing about (although he still tapes the camera at the end). It was a very interesting and conceptually fascinating music video to watch. I would love to know the actual meaning behind everything in the video. I love the song already, and I think it’s cool that there’s a Korean version and an English version for fans to enjoy (the meanings differ a bit as well, but it’s overall consistent). Please support Jaehyun on his solo debut album! I can’t wait to listen to the rest of it!
