Amerie dropped this track at 9pm March 28th. As soon as I seen it, I freaked out. Like hello Amerie?! OMG! I ran to it and now that I have listened, these are my thoughts so far.
Disclaimer:
You already know where this is going if you have read a review from me. I am a fan of Amerie, and I am a music enthusiast. That being said, I will view this from both of those perspectives. I am not an expert with terms when it comes to music and vocals as well. This is a mix between drop day thoughts all the way until now. I have a lot to add to this. The more I listen, the more I can write, but I try to spare you all.
I don’t want to say this is an Amerie comeback as she has been performing for a long time, but if you’re into stan culture at all, well we use the term “comeback” for any new song. So yeah. This is an Amerie comeback! And it’s one that was worth the wait in my opinion. Okay on to the review.
Review:
I have to start off with saying the obvious with the first listen. Everyone did an amazing job from the artist to the production, postproduction, and photographer for the cover of the song.
I am so envious of this song to be honest. I really enjoyed the feel of this song. And I really wish it was mine (ha). It’s so beautiful. I think it has that classic RnB vibe from the late 90’s to early 2000s. It contains a lot of emotions within the delivery of the lyrics.
When I think of Amerie, I think of so many different kinds of sounds. Lately I’ve been into her other song ‘I just died‘. This song reminds of that in a way. It was like the mature version where she is taking control of this situation called love. Or at least I want to think of it like that.
The vibe of this song gives in space or somewhere heavenly. It’s enticing like it’s luring you into her confession. Especially at that hook with the preset that brings in that space vibe.
Listening again I adjusted, but I was waiting for it to do the hook again. I think it goes into the bridge. I wasn’t ready yet as I am used to a specific structure of song now, so hearing something break the pattern was refreshing. It makes the strength of the song even stronger.
I really enjoy this song. Especially her mix of raspy and powerful vocals and light feathery vocals. I think her tone when singing is just so iconic too. It’s those stylistic choices that really dressed the song even better.
Lyrical Analysis:
I believe this song is about a person who you created this unique bond with. You notice how nice it is. You’re enjoying each other’s time, but it’s only been nice. You want to get “closer, closer” all the time. Maybe move to the next step? Yes. And you’re putting it out there taking that leap.
That’s my take at least. I would love to hear the meaning, inspo, and any other details if you have them for us. Don’t hesitate to hit us up Amerie.
You can see the indifferent things that make this man special compared to the others. Like the way he makes her laugh. The way they are under the moonlight, the kisses, everything. But the hook says, “it’s something about you”, but the lyrics say a few things that makes him “only” him.
I like how she closed off other options as well. No one is competing. I really like the lyrics where it’s saying, “we could” and “we can”. Like in a way saying, “Just throwing it out there”.
It’s like they have a special bond they both know about, but they are not doing anything about it, and she is finally standing up for it. She’s not fighting the feelings but fighting for the feelings.
Okay lyrics analysis over lol! …For now…
More Analysis:
Another thing. I really like how the producer tag was in the layers and didn’t stand out. More on the music. We get I think two different pianos (one might be presets), bass, strings (I think harp?), drums, and I believe 808’s. There’s so many different instruments I can’t identify, but all of them work so well. And the layering with her vocals…come onnnnnnnn! I really want to hear an acapella version and instrumental so please release this. Pleaseeeeeee!
This is the true RnB song I have been missing in my life for so long. You do not understand how refreshing this is. I meant to publish the article when she was working on this song on her lives. She teased new music during the live and we got to watch her record most of this on the live. She brought the fans with her. Also, her and Troy Taylor U The Goat was jamming to it you can tell how much fun they had making this. How passionate they were about the music process. As a listener, that makes it more worth listening to.
Speaking of it while listening to that live, you can hear how hard that beat is from the studio. The music deserves a true speaker for all the hard work to show more.
I personally think this song does better with headphones and probably in the car or other speakers. I played it on the tv and the charm kind of left. All of that bass, echoing, and dynamic in the song disappeared. So, keep that in mind when you give it a true listen.
CLOSING THOUGHTS:
This song deserves all the success with will get. I wonder where will this song place in the album. There are so many places it can go so I’m curious. And I really cannot wait to hear the other songs that were teased as well. And the Amerie album we are all hoping for. Send her lots of love and great comments on this song.
For now, I will be replaying this song. I hope you will too. See you on the next article and take care!
