Well happy 1117 day everyone! You know I had to post it today. Please come back for more updates after the promo period! Also check out the preview if you want as well! As well as King’s Crown ratings towards the end of the review.
I do have bias perspectives (I like to mention this in all my reviews). I give my thoughts a lot in this as well (like many reviews), but from two points of view. I am an Atiny, but I am also a music enthusiast. So, I try to give my point of view through these two lenses in my review. If this isn’t your kind of reading, we have so much more on this site! I highly suggest them.
I will keep updating this as we are in the promotion period. For now, this is just a small analysis on the songs themselves. It’s lacking the usual A.P. style. I apologize.
So, what’s missing? Well…I don’t look at any other videos during the streaming period of at least a week. It’s just how I roll with that kind of thing. Please understand. And there’s more information I add too that I will have to wait to update. Usually, they give a lot of behind-the-scenes content and go live a lot. Plus, the interviews, their post, and performances. So, there’s a lot to put into this. Let’s unveil things as time goes. For now, here’s the review:
DEEP DIVE (Track 1)
Sound wise:
I listened to Siren before which is from the previous album. It works great as a transition.
Quick notes: -This song really does have a great sound. Everyone’s singing is amazing. I love the more straightforward tones, airy tones, and Mingi’s aggressive rap was nice, and he played with a lot of different rhythms. Hongjoong’s rap is very vibey. -This pre-chorus is nice. I think I like it more than the chorus, but the chorus is this nice rhythmic pattern that is repetitive. Overall, this song is really seamless. I love the patterns, harmonies, and nice mellow beat. -That ending was shocking! I was very shocked. I didn’t know it would just end after Hongjoong. That was a cool choice!
Lyrics Analysis:
I really enjoy how this song is organized. Everyone’s voice fits so well on this song. On top of that, the song does have driving stuff as well.
Its full of mystery at the beginning. Why are you deep diving? We don’t know yet. I love that “Prime time” lyric so much. I don’t know why either.
Looking at Mingi’s lyrics in verse 1, I’m thinking it might be going all in. That’s what the “deep dive” is an analogy for. And as you commit more and more into what you are in love with, you lose a lot of people and things you thought were with/for you or on your side. And going all in it becomes harder to breathe because of the pressure. Which is why Mingi’s mountain/”summit” lyrics are a good comparison. It’s painful, but something you have to look into if you’re serious about it. It isn’t the first time Ateez had these kinds of lyrics relating to these themes (stress, anxiety, and pressure).
A lot of lyrics showing their hidden emotions and it’s intertwined in such beautiful songs. It’s really sad. I hope they will get some time to themselves and get to do the things their heart desires. This album is definitely a start. They seem really happy with it. I really hope they get that and all they dream of as individuals and as a whole!
I thought the song was about finally emptying that box we referenced in part 1. And finally getting used to it. Or a different meaning. But no! It’s all the sacrifices to be great. And getting closer to the “emptiness”. It’s kind of sad.
I do wonder at the chorus, you’re getting used to it, but what does your heart really want? I think that’s a question that can’t get answered right now. Unfortunately, deep diving in your career or any endeavor creates a tunnel vision that’s hard to balance. Full of comments, goals, and internal thoughts and desires. And you see the lyrics showing the effect of it all with feeling “alone” with the “emptiness”. And it’s like you have to get over it and be alone. That really sucks.
But there’s good too. In verse 2 you see more about the results when committing to deep diving. The flaring lights is the good movements like achievements, good feedback, and other things you can place happiness on. Then the rest of the time it’s darkness and illusion. You are by yourself. Fans can be light too, but when the door closes, it’s back dark until you “comeback” being frank.
It’s also sad because also being honest, it was something at some point you wanted. And there is good, but as humans we see a lot of lows as well. We tend to dwell on those more as well. My advice: celebrate the “little” things as well. Everything has a bright side if you look hard enough. You deserve to be happy.
I love the challenge/question of if you would do the same. With the lyrics reading “would you step into this room?” It’s something they asked before in a previous song. And the some really puts you into their shoes temporarily. Or at least a sample of what they go through in songs/words. But that’s as far as it goes because you won’t know how they feel. You can only experience similar, but not the same.
I think the highs, lows and stats in-between really become toxic obsessions. Kind of like in (spoiler alert) ‘Selfish Waltz’. You get used to it, but once you realize when do you fight it? Truly fight it? I love the lower notes on Jongho.
I think by verse 3 we get Hongjoong telling us the story of Ateez. Like going all these places. You see all the success especially by knowing as a Atiny. You see all the hard work, but when it’s time for them to lay back down and the lights along with the cameras are off, how do they feel? Well, this song lets us have a sample of that feeling. As good as the song sounds…it’s sad. Wanting to “live a real life” and “searching for something” makes it all too real. I mean for me, I do crave to step into the room and just live my dreams, but this worry plays in my head on a smaller scale. But I hope they can break and live “real lives”. They deserve it, just like the rest of us.
Lingering thoughts:
I think this song is a great drive song. I think you can vibe really well to this song. It’s really addicting and lingers in your head.
Dolby Atmos Suggestion: Center Channel
I think that it just sounds better for your listening experience. You can still hear a lot of hidden stuff. However, you are missing some of the stuff.
Scene 1: Value (Track 2)
Sound: The sound genre wise is trap.
Quick notes: -It took you into a story right away. I think this might be one of my favorites. I hope they use this for the intro for ‘Ice On My Teeth’. -I love the confidence when it’s time to start talking.
Lyric Analysis:
Well the lyrics are pretty straight forward, but I still wanted to analyze them if you don’t mind. I’m guessing that “Great minds” thought alike and they are the only ones that see the “true vision”. Just a guess. Just a guess. Just kidding. I mean it’s true, but I’m looking for more.
I think that these lines really set up for whatever is next. And well maybe it’s truw. Only Ateez will know Ateez next steps. The “true vision”. We can only guess, but hey to be fair Atiny is pretty good at it right? I have some quesions.
Is this a setup for more lore? Have we not unlocked the “true vision” yet (and will we)? Who are the “great minds”? and what are their next moves? Soundwise it feels like a misty ucertqain scene. New question: will we get more scenes?! Cause I’m ready!
I lsitened in on the audio clip in the beginning, but I couldn’t, make anything out to be honest. I don’t know if this is an identifiable clip so let me know if this is from something. But it sounds like a rescue mission. TBH I would need to listen in a lot more. Sorry. They seem to be lost in c ommunication. And well they’ve weren’t what we are talking about I think (as they aren’t thinking a like) haha!
My question is “where does this fit into the lore?” “Does it have a spot at all?” Am I looking too much into it? Either way, I am in love with this interlude. I am a sucker for a good interlude as you know and this one works so well with the album and the next track.
Lingering thoughts:
There’s a lot to unpack here that I couldn’t, so if you have any, drop your thoughts please. The track is so mysterious and then we get that confidence when the beat drops. It truly feels like a movie. I think it’s a good transition track.
Dolby Atmos Suggestion: Surrounded Channel
I think you really get that film experience with it. Just make sure to listen to it with a lower volume. I think as you go through the channels the elements get louder through layering. So, that’s your heads up! I think it’s cool to close your eyes and let it take you where your imagination goes.
Ice On My Teeth (Track 3)
I’m ready!
3 min and 23 sec later…I was not ready.
I have to say that the director did so well with the music video. The whole team who made the concept. Amazing job!
Quick notes: -It’s hard to explain, but this reminds me so much of the western hip hop and classical music I am such a huge fan of. Now I know what they were saying. The music video was already the coolness they described. It was very icy! And then we have to talk about the choices they make with their delivery of the music. -I am just blown away with the nonchalant tone they use when flexing. I love it. -I’m listening to the MV this time to double stream. -I really like how it goes straight from the pre chorus to the chorus. -I do wish that there were more rap parts to be honest. I want the song to be 4 minutes maybe (or maybe even more!). It’s so good. -All of the choices are so good in this song. This is that new sound of hip hop I really enjoy.
Delivery: Everyone had this flexing mentality that worked with the visuals, sound, and genre so well.
Lyrically, there’s a lot going on Like saying something and something is in subtext. In my opinion. I mean even “tennis” was said, but the ad-libs were saying other things (IYKYK). There’s a lot going on. And there’s many on their “hitlist”.
I still don’t understand what Mingi was thinking. I won’t be the same. I think it was double meaning. Reading literally…well…”shake it” haha. But there’s more on that later in the analysis.
Beat wise, it’s really addicting with both hip hop and classical elements incorporated.
-I love the loop and how the ad-lib blends with it. There’s a lot of different kinds of ad-libs here and harmonies. I think the choreo is so swaggy, it takes more effort. -I thought at first, I would be able to learn it, but ima leave it to the dancers and movers of the world haha! It reminds me of a few songs I enjoy so it made it even more fun to listen to. I will not mention them in this post.
I think it would be cool for a talking outro every now and then during a live. I mean the fanchant worked so well. I saw it live (on tv…) and it’s such a cool song. They created the fan chant this time themselves and it’s so fun. It feels like Atiny is the hype-tiny! I love it.
I can’t wait to bump this in the car, on my speakers, everywhere. It works really well playing it on different listening devices (earphones, speakers, etc.). It’s bumping. And I hope that they do more like this in the future. Going back to the live, I am so jealous of everyone who will see this on tour.
There is now an English Version of the song. I will give more of my thoughts on that as well in the lyric analysis. I think that they try to enunciate more with the English versions of the song, but I kind of want that more relaxed vibe the original version has. Because with the original it has both Korean and English and it’s just very chill and laidback. With this version there is less laid back as I think there was more attention to detail here. I am very proud of them as they work so hard to bring new sides to themselves. I’m happy to see it.
Lyric analysis:
Personally, I think there’s a lot to uncover. Lyrically, I think it’s more than just Mingi’s lyrics that have double meanings (especially since he made it clear with the layering). The MV gives the killer vibe from the lyrics, but it also has another meaning. And that’s the on
By the last pre-chorus the music gets so intense. The piano really comes alive. And at the end the violin is intense as well. I am really impressed. I have chills. It has this sinister vibe to it and also has that natural beat as well.
English version: I think the English version of the song has more out there flexing similar to what they did with ‘Work’ English version on the previous album. I think that it can be good, but I really like the previous version of the song and the flow. We’ll see if this changes as time goes on and I listen. I think it’s more on the nose with the chorus. It’s fully on theme. Though I want to see them bring up the love calls and things that made the original version special.
The chorus remains the same which I am so happy about.
Mingi’s verse is showing how mcuh flexing you can do. I am wondering what going reckless will do. I think the second part is really showing the themes that tie between “Work” and “Ice On My Teeth”.
Hongjoong’s verse continues this correlation with work and flex. We get a Ateez reference. And the opps got a threat. Y’all be safe.
Jongho comes in with that strong verse of confidence and style. Seonghwa shows what the center of attention is. San then takes his part, and it shows that diamond double meaning. Then we get that one part that carries from the og version on to the chorus.
The next part with Yunho and Wooyoung it has another reference to OT8 (love it!), some flexing. Seonghwa’s part is about a love interest. Jongho’s verse…is yeah (that double meaning we were talking about). But we can be his “Ride or Die!”
Hongjoong’s verse is basically saying “Watch me, I move in silence. My actions are worth way more than words. I love the line “VVS flirting”.
Mingi verse I was looking forward to as it was the puzzle piece to the double meaning before hand. And I really thought some lyrics would stay the same, but instead they got more interesting?! Hit what thing Mingi? Shake what? I wish the shake it stayed in Korean. I’m addicted to it! I love the lyric video as well. It’s really cool!
I also wish some of the lyrics flowed a little better. However, I am very impressed with how much of the song’s theme was transferred into this version. I remember people were saying they wouldn’t say certain things, but they showed us this more mature side this album and I’m impressed. We definitely get that double meaning in this version. I think this is still one you should check out. It brings forward the confidence and flexing and flirting~. The Ateez flair is certainly in this one as well.
Lingering thoughts:
Listening again, I just really enjoy this song. It’s the perfect amount of energy to both chill and dance to. It also has great replay capability.
Oh, there’s also a festa remix now and a few other versions of the song.
Dolby Atmos Suggestion: Surrounded Channel
I think it was very cool to hear the ad-libs. If you’re into this kind of thing, I think it’s worth the listen. I also really appreciate the harmonies. I think this second meaning really comes alive in the hidden. You can also hear so many elements that pretty much melt together with the real song.
Man on Fire (Track 4)
Quick notes: -This song really is giving something to vibe to, takes it away and brings something else. And then the beat feels empty for a long time, and it gets pretty full by the time the chorus. I wish it had something else to fill in the emptiness I kept feeling (beat wise). It was within the parts that repeats throughout the song. -Mingi whispering…I am a sucker for it. Then Hongjoong hypes you back up and the chorus comes in strong this second time. I love the ad-libs and how some parts are strong and others like “I walk into this flame just for you” it’s so soft. I love it. -I’m sad it’s short.
There are so many things in this song to dissect. Like the beat itself really grew on me. And I just love how each member did their parts. It created this feeling that made you want to keep playing repeat.
Lyric Analysis:
This is straight up burning in desire. I can’t answer how to burn out. Haha! Good luck! I love those passionate lyrics with this kind of song genre.
I love the desperation in the lyrics and acknowledgement of consequences, but they are willing to sacriifice it all for their love
The lyrics continue expressing this comparing the new flame and the burning emotions cooking between the two-love interest. It seems like the potential lover is the one who isn’t one to be loved by them, but they are willing to sacrifice for them no matter the cost. That’s a lot haha!
Hey, love if you’re thirsty, better detour and grab some water, this is your daily reminder, okay? Drink that water and have a nice meal. Then follow up and drink more water. Okay? Lol! Back to the lyrics.
Mingi was playing with the lyrics.
I don’t get the “T only F” maybe it’s True only False? So, a bunch of lies and consequences. That’s what I’m thinking. It continues this with Hongjoong saying you know your mind knows it’s wrong, but your body has no self-control. Very interesting as you have this internal conflict as well.
Theres no solution except for the fact you’re going to do it. You’re going to “walk into these flames.” And yeah, that’s the song. Fire fueled by temptation. Love it.
Lingering thoughts:
I can really see this song being at a huge award show, I can see an intense dance mv too. I hope they do something with it!
Dolby Atmos Suggestion: Surrounded Channel
I knew it would probably be this one that will have a lot of stuff for you to look through. As the song progresses, it gets more and more energetic. Especially the build ups. I think it’s the best way to really hear those tone differences in delivery of lyrics. Whether it’s an intense belt or a soft flutter of a voice you can hear everything. You also can hear the ad-libs, producer tags, and harmonies.
Selfish Waltz (Track 5)
OMGGGGGGG it’s here.
Quick notes: -I was very shocked when listening to the preview, because it wasn’t like Waltz music like I thought it would be. Especially with the visualizers, they really tricked us. I enjoy when artists do that! Hongjoong wrote this! And I am obsessed. I swear his artistry is just so impressive how he can create a variety of different sounds and express so well. And he left it up to the singers to do their version of the song. I hope in a live we can hear his version with a guide. I am curious.
Also, fun fact: Hongjoong wrote this song 3 years ago. And he mentioned in a fancall that this was easy to write and even the rearrangement was easy! Nice flex Hongjoong!
The sound: It’s hard to describe. I think Seonghwa also mentioned this as well. He said maybe City pop. I definitely get the vibe of that. I think it might be a bit of a pop & RnB fusion. There’re so many different genres it can be.
Quick Notes:
-I love the low tones already throwing this story right away. The whispering, the strong vocals, the airy ones. This right here is why I am under a spell. The chorus is good (again the pre was weightier), then it goes into this instrumental. Mingi was passionate on this one. The direction of it in my earphones is so strong though. -I think the chorus is just not as strong. I think the high note can be weaker maybe. I love how the rappers had their own time without going back-to-back on this song. I love the ad-libs and the high notes that melt into the song. That was a long note at the end, and it worked so well with the instrumental. I love it.
I think the song sounds amazing. Personally, I would have rearranged the organization of some of it. I really like the part we got to hear in the preview, and I wish it was added twice. I think Mingi and Hongjoong’s verses should have been switched in order as well. I really like the intensity of Mingi’s verse, and I think it would have been great before Jongho’s high note. I want Mingi and Hongjoong’s verses to be longer as well. I think singing and rapping works so well in this song. I just want the song longer. Being clear, I really enjoy the song it already is, but it’s just something I thought about.
This song is really loop friendly. Trust me I listened to it so much. I just love how many different genres are fused in it. I can’t explain it. It really feels somewhere between a city drive, a fashion show, and space. Now maybe all of those combined.
Is it just me or do Ateez songs feel shorter? Even when they are closer to 4 minutes, I just thoroughly enjoy everything happening in them. Every element needs its own time and being blended together I can’t stop replaying it. It hurts when it’s over. Maybe I’m just greedy. Please tell me I’m not the only one.
Lyric Analysis:
Again, this is one of those songs I truly enjoy. As a writer of both music and story’s, it’s really important sometimes to have that of the song and where we begin it. It’s normal, but some songs really lack that part and depending on the message, sometimes it’s important, sometimes it’s not. This one really became stronger with one. The song starts off with that context right away.
Within that first few lyrics, you know this is the night you truly realize it’s the end. More (I’m assuming) closer to the beginning of it as we are realizing this issue.
Each emotion and emotion have their time to breathe. It has time to settle in. The amount of detail is amazing. I enjoy the first lyric. “I don’t know” it feels like you didn’t notice the signs like you’re confused. I don’t know why as you should kind of be aware of your partners feelings, but I guess when busy things happen. I need to know what it is though. I’m excited to see the rest of the lyrics. I’m all the way committed now.
Now they are arguing saying things they can’t take back. NOOOOOOOOOOO! You’re going to regret that. Especially, come on, this is someone you loved before. You still kind of care about them or why else are you still there.
I think I’m going to cry. We’re now at the pre-chorus. I think you’re saying these things maybe because you can’t express how you’re feeling? Or you want to affect them? Maybe it’s a cry for help? I can’t understand why people do that stuff. It’s so toxic.
I have to say, the singers really brought it/ You can hear the regret. The pain and all the emotion. Respect to the highest degree to all of Ateez. Let’s keep going.
Chorus…wow. So this happens all the time. I was wrong haha. This isn’t the beginning, it’s a cycle. That’s really depressing. If anyone ever went through this before, I’m sorry. And if you are currently, leave. It’s not worth it. Okay? You deserve better. Alright, back to the song.
This is not a love song, but a toxic tango, a bawling ballad, or a depressing dance. Definitely not a love song.
By verse 2 we get Mingi trying to get us-this person to be quiet. And well…chile it’s not gonna happen. Yall do this all the time, you should know by now. Come on Mingi! When I first heard this song, I thought he just wanted us to hear him out, but there’s more. He tries to explain his side and relate to how confusing it is. But it must not be working.
It’s like you fight, shut the lights and then when light comes it reveals all the flaws again. So you kiss and make up just to yell “shut up” again or “Hey you be quiet”. It doesn’t work. You know the only solution…let’s be honest. Face the music head on. Take the first steps. Okay no more puns. The two can’t get over one another no matter how hard they try. A draining cycle.
And by verse 3 we get that with Hongjoong. Just dancing through the night (in my interpretation). However, I really like the mention of predictability it is. Like you know all the patterns and everything, yet you’re still dancing. Every day is the same. I love how he brought the dance hall in the comparison. I think the rapping pattern Hongjoong organized like this on purpose.
And at the end we’re stuck there. Though the beat had something that made you feel like something is missing. Something you want fulfilled, but it won’t.
Lingering thoughts:
I find it ironic this is right after the Man on Fire, as this is completely opposite in terms of feelings. That was filled with them, and this is well…lack of.
That’s why we’re lucky we have Dolby Atmos Stems as well! More times I can listen to the song. Music math!
Dolby Atmos Suggestion: Surrounded Channel
I think the center was cool too, but I really like the space feeling this song eludes. I think there’s a lot going on in this channel.
I will write my own choreo to this. I also want to skate to this.
Enough (Track 6)
Quick notes: -The instrument confused me because I thought it was going in a normal pattern, and it changed. I thought it skipped, but then it started to shape itself. -I love the strong lyrics. The togetherness is so good. -Mingi sang rapped this time. I love Hongjoong’s rap it felt super inspirational in the way it was delivered. -That bridge makes you even more emotional. I think it’s the sound. This song can be used for so many experiences. I was hoping the last one was added. -It was interesting to see Mingi sing at the end.
Lyric Analysis
I love how they take time to look at every detail (like I mentioned with the ocean and how it relates to their concept as a group). It starts off with thoughts looking back at dark times and how later they became brighter.
By the Pre-chorus, it turns to the listener and them saying “take it step by step” I think finding their place is just a beautiful concept. It took a lot, but eventually the light was at the end of it all. Through blood, sweat, and tears. A bunch of sacrifice. Each day won’t be a happy one, some will be hard. But there’s brighter days, brighter than you would have imagined at your lowest. Eventually it gets easier, so keep trying.
By the chorus it’s tell you to not feed into the negativity and the doubt, don’t feed into those bad words. Be strong. “Hold on to your ground”.
I love the “far enough” as success is different for everyone. There’s no one perfect. You should only really impress yourself in my opinion as everyone has expectations and you only owe yourself the best. And most importantly, you’re doing well the way you are without those comparisons. You are “perfection” whatever that is to you. Love yourself and embrace it all. You can change and shape things you want to improve on, but know you are doing well enough on your own. Now back to the lyrics.
Mingi’s verse talks about the fears & doubt. And saying basically “why hide”? I’m guessing it’s not living in your full truth. Hiding the fears, the “ugly” part of it all (life), and things people want to cover. But why hide? Be fearless. And “dive in” which I think is a call back to the previous song (‘DEEP DIVE’). Clever!
Hongjoong’s lyrics is basically comforting advice to someone struggling with their emotions. Basically, saying there will be pressure and when it feels like too much take a breather. “Just take a breath that’s enough” I love this advice. It made the song even stronger because now you have someone you can relate to about a similar feeling, some encouraging words, and some stuff to make it a little easier to go through. Plus, hope that it will get better. I will say this is something many should hear. It’s powerful.
Now the target audience I think there the song has many purposes. It’s a reassurance for Ateez as a group to know they are doing well and it’s also a song of comfort and encouragement for Atiny, Ateez enthusiast, and other listeners as well.
I love the outro how it’s saying even when life gets dark and it feels like there’s nowhere to go, we will find the light. There’s always light. Even in the darkest days. Just be patient. You got this.
Keep looking forward. I think Hongjoong’s verse kind of works for the lore (IYKYK) and irl. Frfr. Especially in these times. Stay true to you and “make it grand”. Be proud because there’s only one you. You are unique and a gift to this world.
And that’s the end of the song, also the end of the album. Let’s create some thoughts, shall we?
Lingering thoughts:
I went back and listened to this song today and I almost cried. I then played it again and belted it. It’s an emotional song and I think it really gives you that tough love encouragement you would want.
Dolby Atmos Suggestion: Surrounded Channel
This one will give you chills. I know the song already does that, but i think hearing the beat makes you emotional. And there’s little things like sound effects, the loop, and other ad-libs that make the color of the song.
Rankings:
So, this is hard to do when the album has only been released for 2 days, however, I will do my best. I’m really tied with these y’all. The first two was tied. I’m sure your curious to see how my thoughts changed since the preview! Well, I won’t let you wait any longer, here’s my ratings:
- Ice On My Teeth
- Selfish Waltz
- DEEP DIVE
- Enough
- Man On Fire
- Scene 1: Value
Yes, I’m sure you expected some of them. I really enjoy them. I rated Scene 1: Value lower based on replay ability. I would listen to it for a while (I did!), but it’s more about realistically what I would see myself doing when not listening to the while album.
Dolby Atmos Stems Ratings:
The Dolby Atmos, I will give my suggestions for you to check out this time. Throughout the album review I did suggest one (Left & Right, Center, or Surrounded Channels) that I thought was the strongest. But I will suggest 2-3 songs I would really listen to with the atmos this time. It’s not obviously the full song, but it’s the stuff that you might not hear well. It’s like coming across hidden treasure in the form of music.
- Deep Dive
- Enough
- Scene 1: Value
This isn’t to say you shouldn’t listen to the other ones. These are just a few. I think you should check them all out if you are a music enthusiast like I am!
KING CROWN’S RATING:
Other thoughts:
I really think that this album is super impressive. I thought the colors of the album was going to be similar like I mentioned in the preview post. However, it seems like it’s not that similar. I can see how many of the songs have more of this muted sound (not super intense like previous songs). I think this is a great album to introduce to a person who might not be as adventurous in music. I think it has something for everyone whether it be Hip hop, Pop fusion, or Moombahton.
I was really impressed. And again, they did well with every single song. And I think it fits right into the last album. Personally, I prefer more adventurous albums, but these are gems as well. Give it a try, I think you will enjoy it!
